Brown fat and cold exposure

Adults have heat-burning brown fat that cold can activate. People who have it tend to have better metabolic health, but cause and effect is not settled.

Adults have it

PET-CT studies in 2009 showed functional brown adipose tissue in adult humans [1], and that it is activated by cold in healthy men and is lower in men with higher body fat [2].

Linked to health

In 52,487 patients, those with detectable brown fat had lower odds of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, coronary disease and hypertension [3]. This is associational: healthier people may simply have more brown fat.

Practical and safe

Mild cool exposure (a cooler bedroom, outdoor time in cool weather) is low risk. Ice baths carry real risks for people with heart disease or high blood pressure; talk to a clinician first. There is no proof that cold exposure extends lifespan.
